The wormhole at Sirius Station improved the triangulation established at Alpha Centauri. It allowed the detection of habitable planets in the Epsilon Indi (Bellona) and Epsilon Eridani (Janus) systems. Both would go on to become important economic centers, Bellona due to its ease of communication and transportation to Sol and later Fomalhaut, and Janus due to its function as a hub in the systems beyond Sirius. While initially solely scientific in function, the station had to be largely rebuilt once Janus became an important economic center to allow for increased transportation of goods, persons, and data between Janus and Earth. The Sirius Conflict began after the destruction of the original wormhole to Janus, after which a second wormhole was constructed to Janus, connecting the rest of space with the Sirius Military Consulate.

Observatory

The 10 year journey to Sirius ended in 2042. The Daedalus ship containing the passageway back to Earth entered into what was planned to be continual orbit around the center of the two main stars of the Sirius system. Through a piece-wise transportation of parts through the wormhole, Sirius station was constructed as an observatory that would follow a wide orbit around the system and allow for a great diversity of astrometric data. In coordination with observatories on Earth and the observatory in Alpha Centauri, both Bellona and Janus were discovered. Janus was settled by the coalition of super corporations that would later become the Eridani Trust.

Economic Center

With the economic rise of Janus, and later Gaia, Sirius Station would need to be greatly remodeled to accommodate the traffic between the two worlds. Since installing gravity on Sirius Station was deemed unfeasible, customs were done either on Janus or on Earth, as well as sweeps for biological contaminants. The portals between the two worlds allowed passage of interplanetary bullet trains and internet, as well as a small passage for access to the station itself.

Destruction of the Wormhole

In arguably the greatest economic crisis of the century, the wormhole to Janus was destroyed. There are several conflicting reports regarding the exact cause. One set of witnesses claim the wormhole was bombed by a reactionary group of Earth centrists. Others claim it was an accident, an attack by a religious organisation, or even a preemptive strike by the soon-to-be Sirius Military Consulate. Whatever the reason, it provided the spark that set off the Sirius Conflict, changing the political landscape of several worlds. The explosion and collapse of the wormhole did not stop trains en route for Janus, many of which sailed past the new void, tearing a hole in the station that left some trains to exit the station's orbit. The rest of the Inhabited Universe experienced deep recession as all communication was cut off from nearly a fourth of the human population for 5 years.
