After the wormhole between Sirius and Epsilon Eridani collapsed under suspicious circumstances, the [[Sirius Military Consulate]] (SMC) coalesced in out of the remnants of the [[Eridani Trust]] through a military takeover lasting 7 years known as the [[Sirius Conflict|Sirius Conflict]]. During the coup the wormhole to Kapteyn's star was also destroyed. Instead of committing the great resources necessary for a Daedalus flight to bring Kapteyn back into the Eridani cluster, the SMC devoted these resources into their takeover of the Eridani Trust, arguably helping to decisively gain control of the Eridani cluster before the Sirius wormhole to Epsilon Eridani was repaired. This decision was unpopular with many who had business interests or family in the Kapteyn System. Only after consolidating control did the SMC devote resources to reintegrating Kapteyn into the Eridani cluster, leaving them a full 10 years without  supplies or contact from any other planets.

Its unusually large crew of 5 included [[Alexia]], [[Ilias]] and [[Ayda]], [[James]], and [[Devon]]. Upon arriving in Kapteyn the computer made for the settlement on [[Persephone]], but a computer virus disguised as planetary communications was contracted by the ship, preventing the crew from being awoken. James the pilot was taken out of cryo by an emergency failsafe before the rest of the crew. A kinetic minefield erected around the planet, technology invented after the original wormhole had been severed, threatened the barely maneuverable Daedalus and prompted the resuscitation of the rest of the crew. Ilias woke first, and Alexia soon followed. James was soon able to make a rickety landing in spite of the planet's defenses, but the negative-matter core became too damaged to be used in expanding the ship's wormhole.
